A Legacy Honored: Kankakee Celebrates the Life and Impact of Ira D. Nelson
History was made once again in Kankakee as the 600 block of North Schuyler Avenue was officially designated “Honorary Ira D. Nelson Avenue,” honoring a remarkable man whose life, work, faith, and commitment to community helped break barriers and create a lasting legacy.
The historic designation recognizes Ira D. Nelson, Kankakee’s first state-licensed African-American barber and the longtime owner of Nelson’s Barbershop, later known as Nelson’s Beauty Parlor at 640 N. Schuyler Avenue. For generations, the business was more than a place to receive a haircut or hairstyle, it was a gathering place where people connected, shared stories, received encouragement, and became part of a community tradition.
The honorary street designation was made possible through the dedication and perseverance of Ruby Nelson, Ira’s wife, who worked tirelessly to secure the recognition in honor of her late husband and the legacy he built in Kankakee.
The celebration brought together family members, community leaders, clergy, friends, and residents to witness the unveiling of the new street sign and celebrate a man whose contributions reached far beyond the walls of his barbershop.
Representing Kankakee Mayor Chris Curtis, Alderwoman Cheryl Marshall Malone spoke on behalf of the mayor and highlighted the importance of recognizing individuals whose lives helped shape the community.
The program also included prayers by Pastor Tyler Prude, remarks from Pastor Carl Randle, and acknowledgements from Ira and Ruby Nelson’s son, Roderick Nelson. Family, friends, children, and community members gathered to share in the historic moment.
For Roderick Nelson, the occasion carried tremendous personal significance.
“It’s momentous! I’m proud to be the child of Ira and Ruby Nelson and to cherish the moments and what my parents have paved.”
His words reflected the deeper meaning behind the street designation. This was not simply the unveiling of a sign, it was the honoring of a family, a business, and a legacy that helped open doors for others.
Ruby Nelson expressed her appreciation to everyone who attended and helped make the celebration possible. Her determination to preserve and publicly honor her husband’s legacy demonstrates the power of family, love, and perseverance.
